Thenamaris LNG has recently announced an agreement with HD Hyundai Marine Solution, previously known as HD Hyundai Global Service, a subsidiary of HD Hyundai specializing in ship services and solutions. The agreement is made on 20th December, 2023 which aims to reduce the carbon intensity of LNG fleet operations by implementing a re-liquefaction unit on Thenamaris LNG vessels, aligning with the company's decarbonization objectives.

In collaboration with HD Hyundai Marine Solution, Thenamaris LNG plans to mitigate the carbon footprint of LNG transportation through the installation of a re-liquefaction unit. Through the turnkey retrofit contract, HD Hyundai Marine Solution will provide Thenamaris LNG with engineering, procurement, installation, and commissioning (EPIC) services for Cool Ranger.

Cool Ranger is chartered out to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd (“K” LINE) and currently chartered by Tokyo LNG Tanker, a subsidiary of Tokyo Gas and a partner in the project.

Re-liquefaction equipment plays a vital role in liquefying naturally vaporized gas back into the cargo hold or preventing natural vaporization by using supercooled LNG, thereby minimizing LNG cargo losses. Moreover, the implementation of re-liquefaction unit eliminates the need to combust vaporized gas, leading to a reduction in CO2 emissions.

HD Hyundai Marine Solution brings extensive expertise in executing complex LNG fleet modifications and has a proven track record of delivering lower carbon solutions within the maritime industry.

Mr. Lee Ki-dong, CEO of HD Hyundai Marine Solution, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating, "This contract marks a pivotal milestone as it represents the first reliquefaction project awarded by a major Greek ship owner, Thenamaris LNG. Currently, we are engaged in discussions with numerous clients worldwide, and we anticipate securing additional contracts this year. In addition to reliquefaction retrofitting, we are committed to offering various eco-friendly ship retrofit solutions to support global initiatives aimed at combating climate change."
